According to SCOTUS, a “gratuity” is not a “bribe”. So, if a pol makes a decision favorable to a company, then demands a kickback from the company, after the decision, it’s perfectly fine.

Showering an elected official with money, before the act, dressed up as campaign contributions, is “protected free speech”. Demanding a kickback, after the act, is a “gratuity, not a bribe”.
You need to be an idiot to be convicted of bribery these days. Somehow, some pols still manage to violate the bribery statutes, but that is getting harder and harder.
