Shipping company Matson stops shipping EVs

I don’t recall seeing this news story here at METAR. Apologies if it has been discussed and I missed it.

Headquartered in Hawaii, Matson Inc. primarily operates from Hawaii to the west coast of the US, plus various other locales in the rest of the Pacific. They will no longer accept EVs or plug-in hybrids on their ships.

From the link:
Matson surprised customers this week with an announcement that, effective immediately, it would suspend transporting battery-powered electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles due to the hazardous material classification of their lithium-ion batteries. The ability to ship cars between the mainland of the United States, Hawaii, Guam, and Alaska was an important service both for individuals and car dealers.

In a letter sent to customers, the company writes, “Due to increasing concern for the safety of transporting vehicles powered by large lithium-ion batteries, Matson is suspending acceptance of used or new electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles for transport aboard its vessels.

There was this recent thread, so yes, some have been aware at least…

I saw a similar story at METaR over a year ago when a shipping line had a huge EV fire. Still, China made cars make to the rest of the world. Airlines have lithium restrictions.

Greetings Captainccs, how can I contact you privately? I’m from Caracas. Sorry if I’m bothering you, but it’s important.

Greetings!

Once upon a time there was a very popular board hosted by Fool BuildMWell which sprouted several websites, at least two are still active:

Use the contact page: BMW Method | Contact us

I have not been back to Caracas since 2019.
