There are lots of peoplepaths in Porto, some too step for my liking, specially going downhill.
The Captain
When I started at Whatsa Matta U, the sidewalks in one spots were laid out like a grid. In an obvious shortcut across the grass, was a sign 'This shortcut saves only a few steps. Isn’t your environment worth more than that?" People stayed on the sidewalks. A year or so later, that sign was vandalized. Then people started taking that shortcut, destroying the grass in short order. The university put in a temporary woodchip covered, path. Eventually a concrete sidewalk was put in. I just looked at that area on a satellite view. The area that used to have the grid sidewalks, and that one diagonal “shortcut”, with the rest grass, has now been entirely paved over. This other university will probably end up paving everything too.
