Storage emissions

An interesting paper by Hittinger and Azevedo looks at emissions from large scale energy storage. It seems they are not trivial. The authors write, “Although economically valuable, storage is not fundamentally a “green” technology…”

The 2015 study you linked considered that the original electricity came from nonrenewable sources, oil, coal, etc., where most of the recent effort has been the storage of electricity from wind and solar. So, their assumptions about CO2 emission savings are no longer valid.

Good point, although no grid is 100% renewable. Even California utilizes some 40% fossil fuel sources, IIRC.
