Tesla’s energy storage business continues to boom

The significant ramp-up in deployment is due to Tesla now having fully ramped up its Megafactory in Lathrop, California, where the company produces the Megapack, its energy storage battery pack for large utility-scale project.

Tesla has also ramped up production of its Powerwall, but we have reported some inconsistencies in Tesla’s claimed Powerwall production capacity.

After the success of Megafactory in California, Tesla now aims to replicate it with a new Megafactory in Shanghai, which is expected to start production this year.

While volumes are increasing, Tesla is having the reduce prices for the demand to keep up as competition for energy storage is also ramping up.

Earlier this year, CATL, which supplies Tesla with battery cells for many of its products, released its own Megapack competitor, which is expected to put pressure on Tesla.

Tesla starts production at Shanghai Megapack factory

Tesla has started trial production at its Megapack assembly plant in Shanghai, China, state-owned news reported this week (31 December).

It is the electric vehicle (EV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) firm’s second major manufacturing facility dedicated to producing its grid-scale Megapack BESS product, after its existing facility in Lathrop, California.

Mass production at the Shanghai site is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, the company told Xinhua News Agency (New China News Agency), claiming it was built in record time.

Its initial capacity will be 10,000 Megapacks a year, or 40GWh of energy storage capacity, and Tesla invested around US$200 million (1.45 billion CNY) into it.

Why do people think that leaders will never have competition? That’s not how markets work. :lollipop:

I have read comments by Musk claiming that the end of US EV sanctions does not pose a threat to Tesla. Either he is talking like the typical CEO guest on bubblevision. or he thinks his cult is immune to economic reality.

The comment I have read is about the end of US EV subsidies [INFLATION REDUCTION ACT] not posing a threat to Tesla.

You are, of course, correct. Should read “subsidies”.
