I sure hope Apple’s engineers are working on a version of a foldable phone. Apple desperately needs a new “must buy” product. AI isn’t generating much hype so far.

It needs to have specs just as good as this Oppo Find N5, but tri-folding that when unfolded results in an iPad form-factor display. The result could even be 50% thicker than the Find N5 when folded, and it would still sell like hotcakes. Of course, Apple being Apple, it would easily cost north of $2000.

And also note the boast of “Seamless Mac System Connect” to entice Apple customers! Apple is leaving money on the table without a folding iPhone.

Potential new product name: iPhad! (I both love and hate this name :blush:)

Yeah, I always try to strip that search results garbage from urls. It’s used to track stuff i think.

I have to admit, I’d never heard of or imagined such a device. My only thought (beyond WOW!), is that a case for it may be impossible. My iPhones always get an Otterbox, and they have needed them. I’m not abusive, but when it gets used enough things happen.

I’ve been even more skeptical of folding phones than I am of AI, and I think the market (based on a query I made to Google, “what is the market share of foldable phones?”) is similarly skeptical:

In 2024, foldable smartphones accounted for about 1.5% of the smartphone market, with Samsung leading the market.However, market share is expected to grow to 4.8% by 2028.

Compare asking “what is the market share of apple vision pro?” Google replied to me:

Apple’s Vision Pro has a 5% market share in the virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) market, making it the third-largest player. However, sales have been lower than expected due to the high price and limited application resources.

Of course, the absolute size of the smartphone market likely blows away the overall size of the VR/MR goggle market.
