Kind of along the lines the climate change deniers use: ‘when in the history of the world has the climate not been changing’. The pace of extinctions we humans are causing is not anywhere close to the normal rate of extinction. The rate of extinctions is approaching that of previous mass extinctions that have occurred over the long history of life on earth. Given the rate at which new species arise out of the process of natural selection it is estimated to take a very long time to return to the kind of diversity we have seen in the recent past. Sure, in the long run the earth endures, but in the short run we are making a hash of it. A book worth reading: Amazon.com
