Today Politico.eu reports on the urban/rural that remains still in France. The rural areas continue to decade & decline. A bastion for right wing candidates.

The far-right leader has extended her grip beyond strongholds in northeastern and southern France and pushed west into areas that traditionally voted center left. The Lot-et-Garonne constituency, which includes Tonneins, voted for the Socialist François Hollande in 2012 and centrist Emmanuel Macron in 2017, but swung behind Le Pen this time around.
Though Macron won reelection with 58 percent of the overall vote, the far-right National Rally has never been so strong, with Le Pen gaining 9 percentage points on her second-round result against Macron five years ago.
The yellow vest protests may have ended after a duration of a year. But their complaints have not been addressed. The coronavirus pandemic has cause a shift in public reporting/attention but the festering problem remains.

Internationalizing the division of labor has brought significant economic efficiencies. But it has also brought inequalities unseen for a century, demographic upheaval, and cultural disruption. Now we face the question of what—if anything—we should do about it.

A rec’d the post and I fully agree.
But, your solutions are unless you put real patient long term boring civic effort and investment into
- basic universal public health,
- quality mass education (just do what the Finns do, and we would be spending less and getting far better value, (with the caveat of the most difficult change required: from small Finnish villages up to moderate sized cities public school teachers are treated with more more deference and respect than their rich or powerful neighbors.)
- programmatic social work intervention in dangerously non-functional households or socially isolated individuals with the aim to curb the development of criminal cultures and keep public spaces clean, safe, and a public good.
Ask a Finn how they have achieved such national wealth (and even happiness) with zero natural resources (OK ok ok they have some, viz. tar pine trees [foundation of their foreign trade economy up into the 19th century], pretty rocks and mucky meadows next to often flooding brooks, fish both fresh and salt, scenery, and…, uhm, lotsa of sleet, snow and intense freezing moist wind. Oh, and the ideal spot to grow and harvest the odd natural herbs necessary to make Akavit.
Manufacturing will very soon employ only robots and very smart guys who can program, repair, and adjust zillions of robots using the robots themselves to do so. Not only because robots are becoming cheaper than even Laoian laborers, but because robots can do extremely valuable work that is impossible for humans.

And do those things without error and faster than humans.
The TV show How It’s Made

Shows manufacturing processes that produce thousands and even hundreds of thousands of items made per hour.

Yep the fly in the ointment. Corporations & governments are focused on the short term eg quarterly financial reports & next elections respectively.
