US health system first

Despite spending more per capita on healthcare than any other country in the world, the life expectancy of Americans has fallen by more than two years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The average life expectancy of an American is now more than five years lower than that of citizens in similar high-income countries, according to a new report. …

When compared to similar high-income countries over the same period, however, losses in life expectancy in peer countries were much smaller, and some even made gains.

The 19 peer countries include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England and Wales, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

I blame the anti-vaxers. Pre-pandemic the US was only 3 years in the hole.

The pandemic hit the U.S. population hard in several ways.

  1. Anti-vaxxers increased the death toll unnecessarily. Believe it or not, 10% of people over age 65 still haven’t been vaccinated.
    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html…

  2. Very large increase in drug overdoses.
    https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2021/…

  3. Large increase in traffic accidents.

  4. Many people died because they didn’t see a doctor out of fear of Covid-19 and/or were denied hospital care since the Covid patients overwhelmed the capacity.

  5. The U.S. population has a high rate of co-morbidities that increase the death rate from Covid – especially obesity, which is 40% of the population as well as high blood pressure and lung diseases.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm…

Total excess deaths, 2/1/2020 - 4/2/ 2022, were 1,109,851.

75% of Covid deaths were age 65 and above. Many were in nursing homes that had terrible policies such as allowing unmasked aides to work at more than one facility, spreading Covid around.

Another co-morbidity prevalent in the US; guns.

That was there, pre-pandemic. And mass shootings actually declined with everyone socially-distanced and locked-down.

fwiw, got my second Pfizer booster jab, on schedule, at the grocery store today. Paid for by my socialistical, big gummit, Medicare. Out of pocket cost $0.00. Because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Michigan is only reporting new covid cases once a week. Today’s report works out to over 1,000 new cases/day. The moving average of daily new cases has been running below 1000 since early March.

I noticed that the nationwide COVID death rate has dropped to 500/week – a run rate of about 25,000/yr. That’s in the range of the annual deaths from the seasonal flu, good news if we can keep it there. Of course, with COVID infections spiking again in the heavily-vaccinated Northeast, there are no guarantees.

Maybe funny to you. Damn sure isn’t to me.

The morning news in the DFW area is always full of news about overnight deaths from arguments where each side pulled their guns and started shooting.

Seems like the days of the Old West.

I would be very reluctant to get into an argument with anyone over anything these days - road, bar, grocery story, or parking lot. Seems the first reaction is to reach for your hip with the, now, ever present gun.

Fully endorsed by our state government’s rules on carrying.

Now common. Wasn’t so in the past.

SB,

We have 30k people here die every year because they are not insured. The claim is we are not the same as Sweden with one population. Meaning the dunces that say that do not know Sweden is a melting pot. Worse the dunces are saving care only onto themselves. Those guys believe that is intelligence meanwhile the biggest reason to outsource their factory job is to save on healthcare insurance.

Healthcare spending cannot fight eating the poison produced by the AgroIndustrial Food Complex. That is an individual endeavor.

Not surprised. Over 50% are overweight/obese and about 25% are diabetic/pre-diabetic with many being undiagnosed. Plus, the baby boomer generation is now the senior citizen generation. Presto, you have the 3 major risk factors for major COVID complications.
