Progress is not something I would bet against! Today I was hearing about a brand new electric motor that Tesla is working on. Sorry no link. Apparently Mercedes said that the Tesla semi is breaking the laws of physics. They want to buy two, one to tear down and the other to test. Sorry no link but here a a good video about the semi:

EVs are in the early innings.

“All that matters is total cost of ownership.”

Hold that thought while you remember the Yugo!!!

LOL. If you include the cost of downtime due to vehicle issues, this one turned out to be rather costly.

You’d probably void the warranty. But how would you take possession of the car without their battery?
Also, you don’t have to lease the battery. Their website shows prices for leasing the battery as well as owning it completely.

They are still going to have low sales (at least at first) just being an unknown brand and questions about reliability and where to get service.

999 VF 8 City Edition have arrived.
With all the features of the standard VF 8, the VF 8 City Edition has Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and Smart Services and will be updated regularly over the air (FOTA) to improve vehicle functionality and customer experience.

$42.200 without battery pack which you lease for $169/month for unlimited miles*.* I am basing that on what VinFast is offering the Canadians–VinFast releases battery leasing price plans for Canadian customers

$57,000 with battery pack.

Last July VinnFast opened 6 California showrooms in San Diego, Santa Monica, San Mateo, Commerce, Berkeley and Corte Madera.

4 more opened located in the cities of Los Angeles, Marina del Rey and Irvine, opened on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a showroom in the city of Torrance opened on Saturday.

VinnFast is moving aggressively into California EV market space. After all they need some place to put those 999 newly arrived units.

Looks like we need to wait a little longer to see how they do in the USA market.

It appears VinFast is very serious in competing in the EV space.

VinFast, a subsidiary of conglomerate Vingroup JSC, had said in January its first VF8 all-electric crossovers would be available to lease at a monthly payment of $599 for 24 months.

Its website showed as of Monday a monthly lease price of $399 for the vehicle for a 24-month lease.

VinFast told people who had already paid a refundable deposit on the car that the payment would be $274 per month in California, the first U.S. state to receive the vehicles, according to messages to those potential buyers reviewed by Reuters.

That amounts to a discount of between 33% and 54% from the initially advertised monthly lease price.

VinFast said earlier this month that US Bancorp would provide lease financing for the company’s sales in the United States.

Vehicle subscription service Autonomy has a deal with VinFast to purchase 2,500 EVs, the companies said in November.

And/Or they just got very few takers at the higher price.

True. I suspect that Tesla’s slashing of pricing influenced them.

I just perused their website and they seem to have removed the concept of a separate battery lease. Of course, their current sales are only in CA, so maybe it’ll vary by state?

Their $399/mo lease is for 24 months and only 20,000 miles! Every mile above that is an extra $0.25. How many Californians only drive 20,000 miles in two years?!???

Musk has a new problem involving Dilbert. Tesla is going to really bleed this time. There will be a majority of Americans for the next decade that will buy anyone else’s EV.

I said that when he bought Twitter but he had not done anything regardless of expectations so I dropped my objections. Tesla is fascinating.

This time he has done something. He wont be forgiven. There is no need to forgive. But he wont be doing much business with most of us.

Raises hand.

I average about 8k a year.

I have a 4.5 year old car with ~40K miles on it. I admit that a couple of years recently had low mileage with no long trips

Mike

Didn’t we all.

We can read here that “Average miles per day in CA is 27mi (with a standard deviation, or “spread” of 17 mi). This means that 68% of cars drive between 10 and 44 miles each day.”

27 mi/day x 365 x 2 = 19,548 miles

Somebody did their homework. I have read elsewhere that most EV owners use them as ‘town cars’. That was the case for me when I owned a Volt.

If you have a long-ish commute that pushes the range the of an EV, you probably won’t buy an EV. If your main application is short trips around town then an EV probably works fine.

My very Southern California family from the 50’s to the present has owned one “going mountaineering skiing surf-safari-ing” vehicle that was ugly, bought used, and cherished. For commuting shopping dates and etc we had “Dad” car, “Mom” car, and a plethora of bicycles that got great gas mileage.

We were only somewhat abnormal.
