Totally dumb question. What is Substack? (More interested in finding out about what it is, how it works. I’m really ignorant about social media and all.)

Substack is an online platform that allows writers and content creators to publish newsletters and build a subscription-based audience.
It’s a way for all the people who quit working for the Washington Post to continue to earn a living on their own terms if they can attract a paying audience.
