Why i sold hortonworks

Hortonworks is a company that I have been mulling over since Bear posted http://discussion.fool.com/hortonworks-opportunity-33020461.aspx…. I then did some investigation here, http://discussion.fool.com/hortonworks-deep-dive-33021193.aspx?s… and ultimately purchased some shares. Not long after cloudera fell apart which I review here. http://discussion.fool.com/anatomy-of-a-thesis-change-33030559.a….

Since then I’ve been reading about the hadoop/big data market. I also talked to a friend who is the head product specialist for “cloud” at a major cloud company. I feel like I can’t say more who he is not because it is a secret but that is his information to share. His feeling was that hadoop in some form is here to stay but there are many options now.

Here are some articles i’ve been reading.

Smorgasbord1 very helpfully chimed in the cloudera thread with how the hadoop/big data world is changing. His post reflects a lot of what I have read. http://discussion.fool.com/cloudera-built-their-world-around-had…

One thing to note, software changes. But I didn’t want to bet my money that hadoop would change and become faster/easier/etc.

As the big data marketplace changes I think hortonwork is going to have to distance itself from hadoop to keep relevant and gain new customers. I would guess we see themselves change their messaging from “hadoop” to “big data”. I think there is too much uncertainty in where the big data market is going so the next couple of quarters will be interesting to watch and to see if HDP changes with the market. Ultimately I moved my money to other ideas that I thought were a little bit more secure. HDP may well end up being a great investment here but I think they are cheap at the moment for the above reasons.

Best,
Ethan
