Zillow is/were being sued in New York by a couple in Chappaqua. Their listing was flagged by Zillow as having a 9 out of 10 (extreme) flood risk. “The property is not located in a FEMA flood zone, has never flooded, does not require flood insurance…did not suffer any flooding damage during hurricanes Ida and Irene, and the sump pump in the basement has never been triggered.”

First Street may want to be sure its lawyers (and data sources) are up to snuff.

Buying a home in California? Here’s how seriously you should take Zillow’s climate risk data
https://www.sfchronicle.com/science/article/zillow-home-climate-risk-20147318.php
The scores on Zillow come from First Street Technology, Inc., a New York-based company that uses complex mathematical models to calculate individual climate risks for properties across the country. For each property, the models provide values from 1 to 10 that reflect risks over 30 years, the duration of a typical home mortgage…

Even as these scores are being used by consumers, scientists raise concerns about the accuracy of risk scores at the level of individual homes — particularly for floods…“Flooding is probably one of the toughest hazards to get right,” said Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UC Irvine…

In a 2024 study, Sanders and colleagues reported that just 20% of the Los Angeles properties their model identified as having a high risk of flooding overlapped with First Street’s predictions…First Street’s national-scale flood model “seems to get you in the ballpark for what the risk is at the county scale,” Sanders added. “But then trying to say that you can differentiate the risk of one house versus another seems to not be substantiated by these results.”

Wasn’t WEB betting he needed to have coverage for a nuclear weapon one used in fifty years so he upped the premium for one used in twenty years? Would you say he is wrong?

IIRC, Berkshire never had any nuclear policies. After 9/11 WEB was asked if he would insure against a nuclear attack, and he said he might provide the reinsurance but not more than one city.
