Zoom

The podcast invest Like The Best had an interview with Bill (acclaimed Venture capital investor in Uber, Twitter and Instagram). He discusses network effects throughout the entire podcast and is a great listen. At minute 16, he discusses Zoom for thirty seconds and the network effects surrounding their service. I have always found the concept of network effects to be confusing and hard to figure out. He gives some great examples of network effects and how they were started.

He also talked about NextDoor (where SQ CFO Sarah Friar landed as CEO). It seemed like a weird move at the time but Bill Gurley discusses in length the possible network effects for the business.

1–Found a plumber by just asking on my NextDoor neighborhood webpage.
2–Found a muffler guy same way that told me my exhaust system wasn’t leaking and the P0420 error code I was getting was probably because the engine mounts were worn on my Prius and the connection with the exhaust system could trigger the code every time I accelerated.

But I digress.
I will probably buy into NextDoor when it goes IPO.

I think Sarah Friar sees great potential in this “neighborhood social media” group.
