A group of Philadelphians erased $1.6 million in local medical debt. They celebrated with an unofficial debt burning.

Letters informing beneficiaries are slated to go out mid-September

I can see the state house making that illegal except if you are a collection agency or the arm of a financial institution.

That’s old news. Unpaid medical debt gets sold to debt collectors at deep discounts. Charities with the resources can buy it and forgive the debt.
