exclusive interview with Adam Happel, Walmart’s General Manager of Retail EV Charging

Happel explained that the retailer intends to install Walmart EV charging stations at “thousands of its locations by 2030” and continue installing more in the next decade. He didn’t offer any specific number of stalls per location, only that “each site stall count will depend on market conditions”.

If there aren’t any other EV charging stations in the area, Walmart will install more charging stalls than if there are other fast charging options. H

over 90% of the US population lives within 10 miles of one of its stores

That fact is important because one of the biggest challenges EV charging networks face is securing locations.

CostCo is going to do the same. This will work great, especially for locations near a highway.

I tried using an EA site at a Wal-Mart on I-35 in Waco. They had 6 chargers. I arrived on a Saturday afternoon and it was full, with me second in line and two more came within 10 minutes. The location was good. On the highway, near the WalMart but also near multiple fast food joints.

EVgo has 4 fast chargers near a Whole Foods in Cedar Park, TX. This is also near a lot of shopping and food. Its always busy.

The CostCo and WalMart fast chargers are very important. Not only because they add some charging infrastructure, but also because they appear to be rationally priced compared to the ridiculously high pricing of many EVGo and EA locations.
