Just prior to the Christmas season? The timing seems odd.

Could be in response to them dropping Amazon as a client.

As I recall the announcement was made back in January, but I didn’t realize they were pruning back gradually through next year. Still, I get multiple Amazon packages weekly and haven’t seen a UPS truck deliver one for months.

Same here. They are all Amazon branded delivery vans. And I live waaayyy out in the boonies where the population density is low. I’m sure the economic payoff is even greater in densely populated areas.

The planned job cuts come after UPS eliminated 48,000 jobs last year, 34,000 of which were operational and 14,000 of which were management. The company had previously estimated those combined reductions to total around 20,000…

Though Amazon was previously UPS’ largest customer, the two companies are in the process of gliding down operations together. UPS said Tuesday it expects a total of $3 billion in savings related to the Amazon unwind.

Apropos of nothing, I will just say that I am gobsmacked that Amazon’s business alone was enough to support 30,000 UPS jobs.

I know it’s more than delivery drivers, it likely includes distribution centers and pilots and a host of other things as UPS is structured, but still. 30,000! Whew!
