A week of new hardware launches

Once again I was fooled into thinking there would be some sort of consolidated launch event, but instead we got a week of stuff.

The most noteworthy updates are probably the iPhone 17e with an A19 chip and the Macbook Neo (is it “The One”?) with an A18 Pro chip - both start at $599.

I just ordered a new 14” MacBook Pro with M5 Pro, to replace my 16” MacBook Pro with M1 Pro.

Honestly, my M1 MBP is speedy enough, though. My two main reasons for upgrading are (1) I wanted 2 TB internal SSD (), and (2) I wanted the smaller screen.

1 TB hasn’t really been adequate for me for a few years, not without using external SSDs. I keep lots of data on my computer, and it’s too much of a hassle to figure out what I need or don’t need at any given time.

Also, I attach my MBP to a large Dell monitor at home and office, so the bigger screen of the 16” isn’t really needed, and while traveling to conferences recently, I’ve been finding the 16” MBP a really heavy load to carry in my backpack. I’d carry my M1 iPad Pro in its place if I could, but there are times when I travel and feel like I need direct access to my data, code, and programming environment. I’ve considered leaving my MBP at home and accessing it remotely from the iPad (e.g. via TeamViewer), but that hasn’t really been satisfactory.
