The key question on Monday’s voting paper asked: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”
Alberta remaining in Canada is also a U.S. macroeconomic issue because the United States relies heavily on Canadian energy imports, including oil produced in Alberta. Changes to Alberta’s relationship with Canada could affect energy prices, inflation, trade, employment, and economic growth in the United States.
