Apple Pay for restaurants

Bill at restaurant the other day and several friends pulled out their iPhones, maybe took a photo of the OCR code and somehow paid the bill. I have Apple wallet, I charge purchases by swiping my phone at the grocery store but don’t know how our friends paid their restaurant bill. I have Apple Savings Account too, plus a different credit card in my Wallet. Cash shows empty. Are they paying with Apple Cash? How is the OCR used to do this? I think I would have to add a Debit Card to my Wallet…but not sure how this works??? Do I add $ from my Apple Savings account to cash? Or do I use the Debit card (then there would probably be a credit card charge now that many restaurants are charging a fee for using credit cards…). Can one of you iPhone users give me some step by step guidance on how to accomplish this??? Thanks

Why not ask your friends?

For me, I use my iPhone as you describe - to pay via a credit card. Recently I was in a restaurant and the bill was presented via a device on the table. I much prefer this approach to giving my credit card to someone who runs off and processes the charge.

I am asking my friends - I was hoping some one here would know how to set this up. Perhaps I should call Apple Care instead?

Should work the same as at the grocery, if they have a reader at the restaurant… CC’s are best, I only use Debit Card if I keep it in my hand, never online or in the Wallet, no limit on withdrawals on a Debit, where Credit cards generally have a $50 limit of your liability…

Maybe have to go to the restaurant’s cashier?

I should put my Costco card on the Wallet… I noticed the person in front of me today had her membership/CC on her iPhone… Hmmm…

( gas, 87, was at $4.799 today, at Costco, NorCal.)

And then, in restaurants at least, returns with a slip where I add the tip and sign it, so I have to take it on faith that they enter it correctly. (I take a photo of the signed slip, just in case.)

No wonder EVs are so popular in CA! In the app it shows $2.899 at my local CT warehouse.

Electricity is also very expensive in CA in most places. That’s why home solar panels are so popular. A few years ago, when I was looking at homes with a sibling that lived in CA, probably 10-20% of them had solar panels. Almost all the ones that had solar panels proudly had a display on the kitchen counter of a year’s worth of electric bills. I remember some of them had ridiculously low electric bills, like negligible amounts throughout the entire year. It was a big selling point! I think CA has changed the way residential solar total electric utility prices are calculated since then, so it may not be as lucrative today as it used to be.

A note from a SoCal friend, said his Costco was at $4.059 recently. a little less inland but still pushing $4/g… We didn’t go full EV, but the Hybrid RAV4 hit about 38-40 mpg depending on my lead foot… Beatng the F150 ICE at about 10-12 mpg… No many road miles lately, so it’s fine, retired, etc…
