Artificial Stupidity

Looking to see when the final ALCS game between Toronto and Seattle is (tonight, not to hold you in suspense) I asked Google, whose AI returned this result:

The next ALCS game is not scheduled as the 2025 ALCS has already concluded. The American League champion, which will be either the Toronto Blue Jays or Seattle Mariners, will advance to the World Series to play the National League champion, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The World Series is scheduled to begin on October 24, 2025.

If it can get something this simple wrong, I’d be reluctant to hand over my investing, business accounting, materials procurement, driving, robot control, or much of anything else.

Asked a different way, I got this answer instead:

AI Overview

Yes, there is another Blue Jays vs. Mariners game tonight, Game 7 of the ALCS, scheduled for 8:08 p.m. ET. This will be the deciding game of the series, with the winner advancing to the World Series. The game is being played at Rogers Centre, with Shane Bieber scheduled to start for the Blue Jays

Both queries were made within the last 10 minutes, and both are at opposite ends of the universe of “correct answers.”

Here’s an interesting video about AI and how it can get it wrong…and right. Does not make ChatGPT look so good. DeepSeek on the other hand….

!!!Super!!! valuable video, both for investment insight and also for understanding what humans are and what knowledge is that is utterly distinct from AI.

I have been following Rick Beato (the guy doing the youtube presentation in ges’s post) for a years and he is utterly brilliant, experienced, and knowledgable technically, and also deeply humane in his love for and comprehension of music. E.g. check out this video on the making of Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt,

and try to imagine an AI saying anything useful about the topic that it hadn’t stolen and degraded.
[edit to add this] Watch the actual “Hurt” video and notice the utterly human intersection of visual & audio textures with the text of the song. AI is a zillion miles away from this, for the time being at least.

Rec for posting one of the smartest minds in music. His videos breaking down music are akin to someone explaining, if real magic existed, how wizards cast spells.

I don’t know what he is saying half the time but I am mesmerized - and often wish I could understand how the “magic” is made.

I like what Rick Rubin said when asked about AI taking over music. He said he likes artists because of their point of view. AI doesn’t have a point of view.

Hey, while we are using our ears and souls, here is a magnificent short video of excerpts from and commentary on the recording of the Beach Boys magnificent “Sloop John B.” They literally attented and played at a neighboring High School gym sock hop, and my older brother was there with his girlfriend Cindy.

Brian Wilson was a genius who could not comprehend his own drives and roots.
