B-1 bombers, Houthis & the USS Gettysburg

It seems the B-1 bombers on Diego Garcia haven’t been completely idle.

*On March 15, heavy strikes against Houthi targets were made by B-1 bombers, F-35 Lightning II fighters launched from the Harry Truman, and BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from accompanying warships…

The Houthis had launched a series of missile and drone attacks against the task force to no result. Now they decided on a concerted attack with a large number of missiles at once aimed at a single U.S. warship, hoping to overwhelm its defenses. The target was the USS Gettysburg…

At around noon, the ship’s crew detected approaching Houthi missiles, a dozen of them closing in from different directions. The problem for the Gettysburg was that, after a long deployment, it was running short of missiles… The Gettysburg ’s captain ordered two accompanying guided missile destroyers, the Stout and the Jason Dunham, to take down four of the missiles that were trailing behind the first wave. This left only eight for the Gettysburg to deal with…

a relentless bombing campaign that has failed to deter the Houthis and has taken a heavy toll on civilians.

The Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah, are known for their resilience, having survived a US-backed Saudi/UAE war from 2015 to 2022, which involved heavy airstrikes, a ground campaign, and a blockade. The Yemeni group was also not deterred by a US-UK bombing campaign conducted under President Biden from January 2024 to January 2025.

The only thing that was able to stop Houthi attacks on Israel and Red Sea shipping was the Gaza ceasefire that went into effect on January 19. After Israel violated the deal by imposing a blockade on humanitarian aid and all other goods entering Gaza, the Houthis announced they would re-impose their blockade on Israeli shipping.

Insanity- doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
How is this working out for US?

The Pentagon has shared virtually no details about its war, which has not been authorized by Congress, but it’s likely the bombing campaign has already cost billions in just over one month.

Hm I wonder how many billions spent with no result.
Could that money have been better spent elsewheres?

A US official said initial reports from the scene indicated the Truman made a hard turn to evade Houthi fire, which contributed to the fighter jet falling overboard.

Ah well another $30 million flushed down the toilet.

If I’m not mistaken they are B-2 bombers.

The Captain

Yes, B-2 stealth bombers (Northrop B-2 Spirit) have been used against Houthi targets in Yemen. Specifically, the B-2 has been employed to strike underground weapons storage facilities controlled by the Houthis. While B-1 bombers have also been used in the region, B-2 bombers have been deployed to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and have been used to conduct precision strikes against Houthi targets.

Filling in the dot dot dots:

The problem for the Gettysburg was that, after a long deployment, it was running short of missiles**, particularly the SM-6 (Standard Missile), the weapon that acted as its main defense against attacks by aircraft and missiles. The ship was due for replenishment in a week, but until then, it had to make do.**

I wonder if the Sec. of Defense could explain how the Houthis could have learned about such a weakness.

They can count? You can probably look up the number of rounds the ship carries in “Jane’s”. Watch how many drones and missiles the ship intercepts, and subtract.

I think they just downloaded the Signal app from the Apple App Store and waited for an invitation.
