Instead, the company prefers to refer to the upcoming technology as a “phosphate chemistry system ternary lithium battery,” according to a report by Gasgoo. Regardless of what makes up M3P batteries, they are promised to deliver greater energy density than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, but at cost parity with lithium ternary cells.
We don’t yet know what that official density will be, but for comparison, LMFP batteries have a theoretical energy density 15-20% higher than LFP batteries, but at a similar price.
CATL is the largest battery manufacturer in the world. It is growing. CATL has newer less expensive chemistry, it is in production now, will be in cars in 2023. CATL provides batteries to Tesla the largest EV producer in the world.
This new chemistry is a little
mysterious, was mentioned once in February and now is in mass production.
An excelent thread and thank you all. I had forgotten about Wright’s Law, and its application to battery and other energy tech is extremely investable and with large scale implications that I like.

It’s one reason why EVs will continue eating ICE car’s lunch. Lots of commenters say that EVs are luxury items and what they miss is that Wright’s Law will bring the price/cost down once production capacity can meet the pent up demand.

Unfortunately, I can’t find it right now, but recently I read an article that calculated Wright’s slope for all the major renewables, wind, solar, battery, etc.
Pretty interesting, and gives great hope for the future. Current trends don’t have to continue for very many more years before renewables become the clear low cost source. At that point, fossil fuels will die on their own. The climate bill that was just passed will be a big help because the more you build, the cheaper it gets.
