People used to think of Apple as a computer company and now as a consumer electronics company but the secret sauce is the Apple Human Interface which they developed starting in the early 1980s based on work done at Xerox PARC, one of the leading development labs of the time along with Bell Labs and IBM’s research center.
Bell Labs developed lots of wonderful hardware but possibly their greatest contribution to technology was UNIX, the operating system that runs most of modern computers including Mac. It’s an interesting story. When Bell Labs wanted to transition to digital exchanges, in effect computers, there was no appropriate operating system for the job. So they decided to write UNIX. But there was no great programming language to write an operating system so they first created C. It’s called C because it’s an improvement over an older language called B. They were very creative people!
People see the hardware, the gadgets, but it’s the software that runs the world! Software is the brains of the wonderful machines.
The Captain
was lucky to land his first job as a programmer at the IBM Service Bureau in Caracas. It was the start of a wonderful journey.
