Coral Creation

This is not strictly (or even remotely) energy related but it is about renewing the health of the ocean. And if you wanted to stretch a bit, you can connect it to dragging the ocean floor for minerals used for batteries.

Scientists at the Florida Aquarium have made a breakthrough in the race to save Caribbean coral: For the first time, marine biologists have successfully reproduced elkhorn coral, a critical species, using aquarium technology.

It’s a historic step forward, and one they hope could help revitalize Caribbean ecosystems and could pay humans back by offering extra protection from the fury of hurricanes.

Who pulls it back together saying moving to renewable energy and restoring the ocean’s coral reefs share the same goal of saving the planet for the next generation…

Good news.

I must admit I don’t follow the writer here:
“Elkhorn coral was listed as federally threatened under the US Endangered Species Act in 2006 after scientists found that disease cut the population by 97% since the 1980s. And ocean warming is its largest threat.”

It would seem that disease (which killed 97% of the corals) is the largest threat.

The disease is caused by the warming oceans.

Who notes many don’t realize that coral are actually living creatures and not hardened sediment…

The disease is caused by the warming oceans.

This impact reports agrees that staghorn coral (Acropora palmata) “was considered highly susceptible to disease. There have been some recent studies examining the causative agent of diseases though there is still no consensus.”

Interestingly enough, although the reproduction of the Florida Keys staghorn has fallen to near zero, only 1% of the colonies in Cuba were infected. Nine out of 11 areas in Belize were healthy. 20 sites in Mexico had a 3% rate. 10 sites in the Virgin Islands had a 3% incidence with stable staghorn population.
