WSJ today has article describing short corn now under development. Field corn often grows to 9 ft or higher, and farmers associate tall corn with good yields. But tall corn is susceptible to wind damage that can knock it down making it difficult to harvest.
The new short corn has a thicker stalk and better resists weather damage. Plus can be planted at higher density.
Article reports that wheat was shortened successfully some years ago with excellent results. Short corn is something new. Some are willing to try it but are waiting for yield results.
Bayer (who acquired seed leader Monsanto a while ago) is also a player.
