Couple in their 30s live permanently on cruise ships for a little over $10K a year

We do have Merchant Marine officer training at Kings Point, NY and i hear there is another one in California. Jones Act gives them job and experience opportunities.

There are coastal cruises but they avoid the Jones Act requirements with stops in Mexico or Canada. Those are factory ships that hire crews from South America or Asia to cook most food on board from raw ingredients. Foreign crews keeps fares low.

Jones Act was an issue in recovery efforts for Puerto Rico after hurricane damage. Also in Northeast when energy products are shipped from the Gulf.
