Demographics Force Germany to Import Health Care Workers

Europe’s aging population needs more health care professionals, but staff shortages persist. The University of Rostock is addressing this by helping skilled workers from Vietnam and India settle in Germany. Despite this, for some of those staff, the popularity of far-right parties is a growing concern.

They should come to the United States. We need health care workers.

Germany has been importing lower skill workers for decades. I remember reading an article, maybe 40 years ago, about how your shiny new, built in Munich, Bimmer, was probably assembled by Turkish guest workers.

Woah Steve, are you telling me they make their guests work? What a great idea. My siblings are going to be so pizzed the next time they visit.

Guest workers have been a thing, in many countries, for a long time. Think a Kuwaiti gets his skirt mussed working? Nah. They use Pal guest workers.

There was a guest worker proposal in the US, some 20 years ago. The provisions included the guest had to have a job lined up before entry into the US, and if the guest quit that job (no matter how badly he was treated or another opportunity was better) he would be immediately deported. So, the guest would be little better than an indentured servant. The proposal died quickly. One wonders if it was because the guests would be brown? That issue was not so blatantly driving the discussion then, as it is now.
