Stock prices shot up for two private prison companies, GEO Group and CoreCivic, Bloomberg News reported in November. “We expect the incoming Trump administration to take a much more aggressive approach regarding border security as well as interior enforcement,” explained GEO Group executive chair, George Zoley, “and to request additional funding from Congress to achieve these goals.”
In other words, the “largest mass deportation operation in U.S. history” was going to be a moneymaker.
Rats I missed the bump. Any upside left?
But wait. The article states that the previous administration had 21,713 border enforcement contracts with private corporations and the the prior president received three times more campaign contributions than the current president.
I suppose that will change going forward.
That was my assumption too. The stocks did jump. But, they are talking about dumping people in El Salvador and Gitmo, rather than having the for-profit companies build new concentration camps. They are flying a lot of people in Air Force transports, rather than chartered commercial aircraft.
I’m not so sure the for-profit jailers are a sure bet.
When Guantanamo and prisons are full sounds like tent cities could become popular (while deportees wait to see a judge). Who makes those tents? Are they imported from China?
blink Who said anything about deportees seeing a judge? Has there been any “news” about those people being herded on to Air Force cargo planes having any sort of “legal due process”?
People who admit they are here illegally probably get deported immediately. Those who claim asylum probably get to see a judge. And you can imagine many situations when a judge might decide as in the case of an illegal married to a citizen or with children who are citizens.
I honestly do not know but do these reasons qualify? “TPS is a federal program designed to offer temporary shelter to those fleeing natural disasters or armed conflict.”
I don’t think there is a civil war or natural disaster that that brought them to the US?
The Maduro regime is “bad”, according to the US government. Remember how TI, during his last stint, had a Venezuelan resistance leader as an honored guest at the SOTU speech?
The US just seized a second Venezuelan aircraft, under the authority of sanctions the US has imposed on that country.
