Destroy old "dead" drives

doing some much needed electronic organization, found 2 drives - 1 an Iomega, 1 Kangaru Quicksilver. Both have old financial info (labeled as such) on them however my MBPro will not read either of them. would like to get rid of them but how? They’re really big and I don’t think I can just to just smash (axe/sledge hammer) as I’ve done in past. Any suggestions on how to destroy since I can’t connect them to wipe…thanks

Are they spinning drives with platters? If so, disassemble them, remove the platters and shatter or scratch the hell out of them.

If they’re SSD drives, bend them with pliers, and smash with a hammer and impale with a nail!

I can’t get into the drives. The Kanguru Quicksilver won’t even open. The Iomega is a sealed unit - ugh…

the Kanguru has a dvd in it with my data - but disk won’t come out. Will try to pry it open - I do see some infinitley tiny screws.

Yes, opening the drive and removing the DVD to destroy it is the only way to go. And the Kanguru I suppose must be an old spinning unit, so yes, unscrew the screws to access the platter(s).

I’ve a box in the garage with at least a dozen old HDs, much smaller, some IDS, some SATA, just haven’t had the interest to go ahead take them apart, so I’m keeping an ey out as well for a simpler destructive method, even though I do have the tiny T5, T6 screwdrivers, then once destroyed toss in the electronic waste bin the next time there is one locally…

Vice, big hammer, chisel, broke my air chisel, but the would be handy… Some disks are metal, some glass, some strong magnets in there, too… Maybe fire up the BBQ and roast 'em to death!

Not sure if local computer shops have a cruncher…

I se that Best Buy will destroy them at $30 each. Ugh…not planning to go that route. Will try to get DH to help me to take them apart first. Grrr…

Also remove the magnets. I have a collection of them stored on a lally column in my workshop. Too cool to throw out.

Indeed. I’ve got a handful of those myself. Amazingly strong those magnets are!
