The only food I buy from McDonald’s is an occasional fish sandwich which I order without the “cheese” (“American cheese” which isn’t really cheese at all.) I throw away the bun and eat the fish plain with just the tarter sauce that comes with each one.
If the “fish” is deep fried, you might not be helping yourself that much. The mayo base of the tarter sauce isn’t doing you any favors either. Tossing the “cheese” and the bun may make you feel you are accomplishing something, but are you?
Ditto what IP said on intermittent fasting. Read Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical, whomever you trust, and come up with a workable trial plan.
I presently stop snacking after dinner, drink nothing but black coffee in early a.m. and take a brisk 1 hour walk before breakfast. That gives me a comfortable 14-16 hour fast with some good fat burning at the end of my fast.
Ditto what captain said. Learn about complex vs. simple carbs, etc. I now break my fast with steel cut oats, sweetened with apple slices or berries, a dab of peanut butter. My diet is modeled after the Mediterranean and Harvard/blue zone diets - fish, whole grains, berries, beans, nuts, olive oil, greens and other veggies outlined by the Harvard Mind diet. Now 6’2” 170 pounds at the age of 66 with cholesterol readings that surprised my doctor in a good way.
I eat filling low glycemic snacks. I do not diet.

The mayo is probably made with vegetable oil, not healthy. It could have corn starch as thickening agent. Read the labels. It’s amazing what the food chemists can come up with.
Do you, or anyone else reading this, have any ideas that might help me get rid of some fat?
You just opened a can of worms.
DW about 4 years ago went on a “lower carb” diet, NOT Keto, and dropped (won’t tell me how much) weight. Not a 100 pounds, she was never obese nor overweight, but probably close to 25. That was her only change. Still lifts weights and is busy in the garden.
I tried it, not to loose weight, but just out of curiosity. Didn’t loose weight but had the side effect of cholesterol going from 180 to 280. What happened? A lot of the fiber containing foods I loved were no no’s or limited on a low carb diet (bananas, oat meal, apples, and more). So I’m back on my “see food” diet, I see food I eat food.
Most people concentrate on cardiovascular exercise to loose weight. The better option is weight training. Build muscle and it is easier to control your weight.
Plus, don’t look at the scale in isolation. Body Mass Index is a gross rule of thumb. You can look at those but do so in combination with percent body fat.

Not to mention the sugars that are often found in condiments, but he did say it was occasional and I wouldn’t stress over it too much. It’s not the fish that is the problem, however.
I prefer not to look at the scale at all, instead try on a pair of pants that have been tight and see how they fit. I have been known to put on weight but lose inches. It’s the weight training.

There’s a wide, wide world of high fiber foods that are indeed “allowed,” and what is allowed is what your body requires. Those needing to lose weight or rein in insulin resistance eat lower carb than those of us who are simply looking to stay healthy. If you are just looking to eat healthily, your favorite foods are allowed. It’s not a religion with strict mandates and you do what works for you. For some it’s staying under 30 net grams of carbs, for others it’s under 100, or higher. We are not all the same and there is no one size fits all in this way of eating. Not a diet that one loses weight on and then changes, but a lifestyle that can evolve with your evolving needs.
Heck, we have a persimmon tree that had a record harvest this year, as well as figs. During much of the summer I harvested about 5 lbs of figs/day! Both got extensively dehydrated and we use them as pick-me-ups during our marathon hikes or pickleball games. They are an absolute winner for us during tournaments. Gummy figs…yum!
Below is the link to my reply to her almost 13 years ago, and my thoughts haven’t changed much. Apparently the responders to this current effort don’t differ much than those offered previously…with the one exception of someone just asking for help.
Looking at the current CDC data provided at the link, a social crusader might better focus their attention on heart disease and cancer…each of which cause more than 6 times the deaths.

Looking at the data, one should realize diabetes negatively effects #1 heart disease, #3 COVID, #5 stroke, and #10 renal disease. One could even make an argument that it contributes to all the other top ten except cancer and even that is possible.
So yes, diabetes IS a very bad macroeconomic problem that can have a big payoff with potential little cost.
Type 2 diabetes is preventable with diet and exercise. The commission realized that the problem can’t be solved with simple medical intervention. The lower income people who are disproportionately affected by diabetes often live in food deserts and lack the money and transportation to buy nutritious foods.
[A big] part of the problem is the irrational fear of fat that was ensconced by government into the food pyramids for many decades now. Of course, they replaced those fats with sugars, and that’s a big part of what’s damaging us now.

Yesterday I bought lard to see how it works in the kitchen. So far so good.
The Captain
as a child during the war in Budapest a favorite treat was a slice of bread with chicken fat. Yummy!
Worked for me … I mandated that I stop ingesting sugar and other stuff including wine a bit over two years ago, dropped 21 Kg. I had to start wearing belts again to keep my pants from falling down around my ankles! …

Wife and I saw our family doctor this morning for our annual flu shots and checkup. Did the blood and urine thing last week. She was impressed with our numbers, “everything is perfect”, even did the foot poke test. Blood pressure, A1Cs perfect (wife is diabetic but well controlled). Doc is jealous that we are going to Cuba while she has to go back to Jolly old England where the weather has been terrible to visit family. She did ask how I managed to drop so much weight so quickly … mostly I dropped the sugar and used the stairs rather than the elevator. Go for walkabouts when the weather allows.
While we were in the waiting room an old fellow came in gasping and asking to see the doctor … he probably should have gone to ER as he was having a terrible time breathing and was complaining about his heart. I did a mental check of my first aid training in case he fell off the chair in front of me. The clinic is a mixture of Walk-In and private practice but not really equipped for ER type work. The receptionist grabbed the first Walk-in doc who came available after 10 minutes or so relieving me of the need to spring into action as we were leaving at the time.
Thought occurred to me that one of the advantages of single payer is that the doc doesn’t have to be nice to the patients to get paid! She is however very nice but wanted me to write down the website for the company that does direct flights to and from Varadero for next year.
