Economics, Finance, or Politics?

Which is it?

Quick reaction is…lawsuit would be coming. Sounds expensive to California residents.

If the California goverment does it, it will be expenisive for the people of the state! Why even have ZEV rebates.

Wont matter.

Musk and Tesla are persona non grata.

GM will bust his stones.

GM Caddies are now in Formula One.

25% tariffs could be a problem for Ford and GM EV plans:

The Chevrolet Blazer EV is manufactured at General Motors’ (GM) Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV is manufactured at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.

The 2024 Mustang Mach-E is currently assembled in Cuautitlán Izcalli, Mexico.

GM has something like 8 other models that are EV.

California spends a lot of money for clean air initiatives. Each EV purchased means one less ICE vehicle being operated. The credit is for smog reduction. CO2 reduction is a happy byproduct.

Eight money losers instead of a couple of money makers. Expensive job creation the UAW loves.

Smog reduction I fully support. CO2 reduction is just politics.

Equinox is (was?) to be the volume model.

They are gearing up to build the new Bolt in the USA. Don’t know where the battery will be built. My '21 Bolt’s batteries, all three of them so far, were made by LG in Michigan.

There are only something like 3 frames, battery set ups for 10 models. If GM has production in the US, it does, then they can bolt a different model’s top onto it there. They can switch out where the Equinox is built easily.

If the Equinox was not going to be the big seller so what? They can bolt the bigger seller on the frame.

Well, yes, certainly possible. Here is an example. On July 14, 2016, FCA announced they would move the non-grand Cherokee from Toledo to Belvidere. On July 1, 2017, the first Cherokee came off the Belvidere line. The move cost $350M

“My '21 Bolt’s batteries, all three of them so far, were made by LG in Michigan.”

How do you like your Bolt, and how does it perform in the winter ? Do you find it hard to manage the range reduction in our Michigan winters ? Our winters are not all that harsh, but it definitely gets cold.

Interesting. Given that smog slows climate change, it seems like if you’re pro CO2, you’d have to be pro smog…

  • SMOG is poisonous
  • CO2 is plant food
  • Climate Change is politics
  • Your conclusion makes no sense.

We love it, as our around town car. 65k miles in 3 1/2 years. It’s never been more than 100 miles from home and winter range here in S. Ohio is not an issue. Using the heater drops the range quite a bit. We charge to 80% and with heater use that gives an estimated 170 miles, plenty for our use. In summer it’s about 220 at 80%.

Fast charging is slow, we hear, but we always charge at home, so again, not an issue.

One set of tires, one set of wiper blades, one windshield. No other maintenance costs to us. GM did fit two new batteries under warranty, but I suspect neither one had anything wrong with it. First was the fire recall, second was soon after while GMs diagnostic software still had bugs.

Bolts are really cheap used right now.

A lot less money than building a new assembly line.

But I am talking the same assembly line mostly and the same chassis.

Indeed. VW’s budget for the US EV plant it broke ground for at the start of the year is $2B. Retooling an idle plant to build a new model is a lot faster too.

Steve

GM for the first time is fully componentizing the EV model type and the EV chassis type. This means the costs are much lower. Where the EV is built is easier to decide.
