A Florida GOP lawmaker said the anti-immigration law he backed was supposed to tell new immigrants to “stay out.”
But now migrant families are fleeing the state, and it’s a “big problem” for farmers and tourism, Rep. Rick Roth said.
Videos shared on Twitter showed Roth and other GOP lawmakers urging people to convince migrants to stay.
Ahh you remember when we were talking about this and some people said it wouldn’t be a problem? Now a few short months and the chickens have come home to roost? But do not worry farming in Florida is just a small part of the community.
Maybe Desantis needs to fly more immigrants up to New York and California, They seem to want the workers.
I am legal immigrant and went through a lot of straggles when came to USA. My opinion on that situation is that if restaurants and other businesses have to pay to USA citizens or legal residence more. Illegal immigration is favoring business owners not blue color labor.
I acn bring example from real life. When I just came to USA I began to work in Machine shop as Milling and Lathe machine operator. My hourly wage was 8.25 $/hr the same as illegal immigrants who worked with me. After 6 month I left company and went to other shop for 20 $/hr wage with all benefits. Owner hired more illegal immigrants who he trained and paid 8.25-12 $/hr. When hard time came Good paying shop had to laid off people. Sweat shop kicked out least experienced people went through low time and picked contracts from good paying shop because he can give lower price. Owner still employing illegal immigrants not giving them any benefits .
I don’t feel bitter because it helped me to chose different pass in my life but for some people it was life braking event.
Maybe? It’s way too soon for any chickens to have gotten here, yet - and the chickens that these folks are describing are different than the ones we talked about. According to the GOP reps, the law is having an unexpected and unintended consequence - it is getting people who are already in the state legally to leave. People who are not themselves governed by the law’s provisions are supposedly leaving along with the undocumented members of their families. If that happens in large numbers, then look out. I don’t trust any of these three reps, though, to have any accurate information on whether that’s actually happening or not.
If you read that you would see that it is getting illegal and legal to leave. When we talked about this I told you that there was already federal laws on this and you stated that the laws were not on Florida’s books, I am paraphrasing. But these are not unintended consequences at all. Even a blind man could have seen this coming. You make someone feel less than equal or try to run them down, tends to make them want to leave. I think Florida is in for a lot more “unintended consequences.”
I do not blame you, I wouldn’t trust anyone who said the reason the law was written, was to scare people, and that it doesn’t have any teeth. So now people have to wonder when they visit Florida, just which laws were written that they actually hope to enforce. LOL.
Excuse me but I am going to pass this law over here about brown folks…dont worry if you are brown. You mean that uncomfortable? How so? As a white male how could such a law possibly make anyone uncomfortable…dripping in sarcasm. Oh and other states pay more than Florida’s $11? Plus you do not have to work in a swamp? You are kidding do tell.
Maybe. I don’t think that the Florida GOP is all that cognizant of the family structure of undocumented workers, and that a lot of them probably have blended families where some members are citizens/legally present and others are not. But even if they should have anticipated some blended families might leave as a unit, I’m sure they didn’t expect a very large amount of outmigration of legal workers. The stereotype of the undocumented is someone who comes here for work and sends remittances back home, after all.
Undocumented immigrants are only about 3.8% of Florida’s population (close to the 3.2% in the U.S.). They often live with family members who are U.S. citizens in a mixed status home. Including all members in these mixed status homes, the new Florida law might directly affect about 8% of its population. Transgender is about 0.5% of the population, and including mixed status increases the number directly affected to about 2%. These recent Florida law changes directly affect about 10% of the population. Significant. Not depression levels, but certainly recession levels of decline if these people leave the state.
Florida’s anti-immigrant message might also be encouraging documented immigrants to leave, and 21% of Florida is populated by immigrants. These immigrants often have seen corruption in their birth nations, and might leave Florida if the government seems untrustworthy. But no signs of this yet. I have some close family members living in Florida who are documented immigrants, and they are not leaving the state. They are more concerned about the recent changes in state gun laws.

the new FL immigration law is economic suicide: Immigration attorney, May 16, 2023
“21% of the state is populated by immigrants… 35% of entrepreneurs are immigrants… over 21% of the population being foreign born… over half a million US citizens living with at least one undocumented family member in their home in a mixed status environment… a lot of these immigrants that come from states that have been very polarized, with there’s been a lot of corruption and collusion, they tend to vote a very specific way because they’re trying to avoid having that here”
“There were 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2017, accounting for 3.2% of the nation’s population.”
They are Catholics, none of the GOP has Catholics in their ranks? That will pretty much guide you on how they will react to an attack on their family structure.
The boat fishing charters are getting out of hand also. I might have to start going to North Carolina. Almost 2000 dollars for an eight hour trip for my brother in law and I. If the Captain didn’t do as great a job as he did I would have felt let down but dang he did a great job.
I will set you up with someone on the cape. The cape means you are further out to sea before you even begin. Catch some lobster perhaps or put them back. Blue fish and much more…He is out of Truro…last town before P town.
Lots of GOP Catholics, including several of my former coworkers. The Fundy Protestants made common cause with Catholics over abortion and birth control years ago.
Doesn’t it seem strange Steve that all the GOP Catholics and Protestants would allow Gods children to be treated the way they do? Also Desantis is supposedly a Catholic, but then how many Jews fought for Hitler in World War 2? Think about that.
I was in the Cape a few years back Leap. Loved the area but didn’t do any fishing. But I did take a wine tour on a Schooner that was well worth it. LOL
Right Steve, So I hear a lot of people are coming from Venezuela but I do not understand why they are coming to the United States instead of any of the other countries to the South. Brazil, Argentina, Panama, Mexico? Are none of those countries worth Immigrating to?
