Florida Ground Zero For Obamacare Premium Spikes

You have to wonder. How many of the disasters that regularly hit Florida are self inflicted?

I own a small business in Florida, use ACA and do not qualify for subsidies. My premium (family of 3) for a Bronze level HMO with a high deductible just went from $1750/mo to 2350/mo. If somebody with subsidies is paying 50/mo, I can see how that would not be sustainable.

Florida failed to do the Obamacare Medicaid expansion, which means that billions of dollars a year in tax subsidies for people just above the poverty line (138% of FPL) aren’t flowing to the state. Hospitals and doctors in the state are forced to jack up prices on people like you with private insurance to provide uncompensated care for those that can’t afford insurance.

Also, when you buy an Obamacare policy, the insurer skims off 20% of premiums collected for overhead and profit, plus takes another 3% to 5% from you in price gouging on prescription drugs through their captive PBM. My Obamacare premium for a Bronze plan was $1.42/month (less than $20/year) the last 2 years before I turned age 65 and qualified for Medicare. I got a rebate check for $632 from my insurer because he failed to spend the required 80% on actual health care for policyholders. It’s a complete scam.

Medicare for all would save a lot of money if people understood how large the “corruption tax” is for the current system.

Net spending for Medicare in 2025 is projected at 1.01 trillion and covers the sickest 25% of people in the U.S. , yet all spending is 5.6 trillion. Seems like medicare for all would be a bargain. Probably could do it for 10% additional consumption tax.
