The difference is in exactly what you stated, “Most of the places I worked” It’s a lot different world now with everything they have on people. Try being an activist, getting fired, and finding a new job now. I think this will be the down fall of unions.

John Poindexter is in his 80s now, but the “Total Information Awareness” program is probably still chugging along, buried in DoD’s secret intelligence budget.
Back in the 70s or 80s, the boss had to overhear your comment, or have some lickspittle trying to advance himself, report your comment. Now. All the “JC” has to do is make a few keystrokes, find all the “dirt” he needs to purge his company of all the people guilty of “wrong thought”.
