GM Ups Competition in EV Pickup War

GM announced that the Chevrolet Silverado EV WT electric pickup will have 450 miles of range on a single charge – significantly higher than expected.
50% more that Ford’s offering

The first edition is expected to feature 510 horsepower, 615 lb-ft of torque, 1,200 lb. of payload capacity, and 8,000 lb. of towing capacity. That towing capacity is a bit limited, but GM says that a Max Towing Package will upgrade the capacity to up to 20,000 lb. in 2025
20% less than Ford’s offering.

Rivian R1T has a towing capacity of 11,000 lbs. It has 2 range options 270 & 400.

Tesla cybertruck arrival is expected soon. Tesla boasts a 500 mile range & 14,000 towing capacity.

The above specs are for premium models. So expect pricing of $75,000 and up.

That is impressive TJ but it’s a truck and the towing range is not very impressive.

The “EV Pickup War” will make great theater, but it’s constrained by some things:

  • CyberTruck will carve out a portion of the overall pickup market (EV & ICE), weakening the legacy companies a bit. Not huge, but it’ll hurt them. Sales? All guesswork at the point. I’ve been figuring 250k. Musk says 375k. Time will tell.

  • GM, Ford, RAM or Tesla… doesn’t matter whose pickup has the biggest range or greatest towing. As the capability gets larger, so does the price tag… and the number they’ll sell at that capability will dwindle down to the folks who feel compelled to “have the biggest”. smh

  • The legacy EVs will be cannibilizing their more profitable ICE trucks. Tsk, tsk.
