1 – My current computer is 11 yrs old.
2 – I just bought a brand new desktop, with Win11, as an upgrade
3 – I seem to remember (from 11 yrs ago) that when I started up my current machine Windows asked me 100 questions and the machine had to be online in order to interface with MS Hindquarters during the initiation process but I’m not sure. I might have that memory conflated with something else. Possibly upgrading from Win 8 to Win 10
4 – Can I just start up my new machine and begin swapping files over from the old machine without being online during any of that initializing process?
5 – I’m not ready to start using the new machine yet I just want to load it up and install all the utilities. I don’t want to start the process and end up jamming myself

When you start it up it is going to try to move everything into the cloud and charge you to get more storage in the cloud. I suggest you do not save anything to onedrive and save everything local. Then if you want something saved to the cloud you can choose what you want.

I would never use the cloud. They still haven’t told me who owns it or any of the data on it. All I want to do is start the new machine, plug in the detachable hard drive I use for back-up, and load my files onto the new machine then install all the utilities. I don’t want to get trapped NOT being able to do that UNTIL I do a lot of stuff at some MicroSoft altar that must be done online.

This by far is the best suggestion offered. Do not use One Drive (the cloud) or whatever they call it now-a-days. You will be screwed for life. Eventually M/S will start charging for cloud storage. Beware of anything that asks if you want to backup.
If you want to backup send your backups to a thumb drive or external drive. If you want to save a document save it locally not to One Drive.
Very good suggesiton.

I know I’m dragging my own post off topic, but:
If I’m just starting up a machine right out of the box what would I be backing up? There’s nothing there to back up.
Al my backing up is on a detachable HD and has been since 1999 or so, so that’s not an issue. I just need to know if I use my new machine
without having to go online while setting it up

That would be the best thing you could do with what you are trying to do. Start it up off line and see if it will allow you to. I haven’t tried that. When you do go on line it will need to update the os and drivers though and I assume it will want to back up to the cloud. It’s not that you want to, It’s that Microsoft is really pushing hard for you to do that. You don’t have to do it but it will keep coming back and asking you to set it up and back up to the cloud. I am just warning you of the process. It caught me up in it and I didn’t realize it till it was to late. It tricked me into backing it up into the cloud and it took awhile to get it all straightend out. So…
With your set up just see if you can start offline, when you go on line and it asks you to set it up or back it up it will ask you to do it now or wait a few days or some such message, just keep saying to wait or remind you.

You can start the setup offline and you may want to setup with a ‘local’ account as opposed to a Microsoft account. On your existing PC, search the web on the pros and cons of local vs MS accounts. Whatever your choice, search the web for instructions on how to do the setup.

I didn’t know about “accounts”. Whenever I am asked to open an account I always refuse but I suppose it’s mandatory now…? I will research “local account.” Why I need an account to use my own machine…I’ll tell you, Boy… what da… is this world coming to… ? (walks away mumbling to himself)
I did look , rather low grade, online for how to set up a new WIN 11 computer and didn’t see anything I found useful or relevant to my situation but I will hit it harder I guess
