I still can’t believe that Intel - the once almighty God Of Small Things inside your computer -has fallen so low as to be considered a takeover target for Qualcomm!
’ On Friday afternoon, The Wall Street Journal reported Intel had been approached by fellow chip giant Qualcomm about a possible takeover.
The beginning of the end for Intel started decades ago when they got too attached to the x86 architecture. Read:
Intel had multiple opportunities to embrace ARM Holdings’s architecture, the first was when they acquired StrongARM from DEC. StrongARM morphed into XScale which was sold to Marvell Technology Group in June 2006. The world was moving to mobile computing that relied on low power electronics while the x86 architecture reigned supreme in data centers. Think billions of smartphones, laptops, tablets, IOT devices and a plethora of other mobile devices. Huge energy consumption is one major obstacle fot AI. Nvidia and Testa are using ARM architecture.
BTW, gas guzzlers (ICE vehicles) are falling into the same trap.
