This is an interesting question. Do we think ppl who entered illegally or overstayed visas are preventing/slowing legal migrations/applications. Or that giving a pathway to be legal would slow/impede the process for new applicants outside the country.
Seems to me to be 2 seperate problems that may require seperate (and feasible to execute and enforce) policies. One should not really affect the other.
Most ppl applying for legal immigration are student visas and h1bs for skilled work (tech, healthcare, etc). Most illegal immigration is not. So its not like theyre outcomepting jobs or opportunities either.
Also seems to me that we dont want any immigrants legal or otherwise right now.

The chief executive implementing and then pausing their own policies, repeatedly, is not “made up.”
It is actual policy, not hypothetical, with global macro impacts.
This has broad implications for labor and capital, and corresponding broad implications for investment decisions regarding allocation of labor and capital.
As one of many real life examples, a Florida roofing contractor may wonder,
“Should I hire all of these immigrant workers because I have so many roof replacement jobs?
If I hire more such workers, my company can complete more work and I can make more money.
And my customers get new roofs.
And I employ more workers that in turn support the local economy.”
To understand the implications, we must first know
“What is the policy?”
No one knows.
An analogy:
A toddler discovers a light switch and flips it on and off, over and over again, wondering and delighting at the power of the simple action to project light or impose darkness.
What will happen next, will we have light or darkness?
No one knows.
Because no one can predict the toddler’s behavior.

Think about that. Biden and Dem’s were playing it for elections. So you had other side, for them immigration is the election issue and the bill got killed. It is not objective to blame only one party.

Actually it is, for while it is true that both sides were playing politics, one side was offering to solve the problem that the other was complaining about.
The party that was complaining rejected the offer and actually killed it, while continuing to complain about the problem they just decided wasn’t worth solving, only worth complaining about - for political purposes. That is why the blame belongs entirely on one party.

The Borders have been open for decades. I crossed the Canadian and Mexican border with only a drivers license in the 80’s. Nobody has solved that because the bill to solve it has not been passed by congress. How can you blame a President for open borders when it is Congress’s job to pass legislation. What Trump has done is not a fix because when he leaves(He is a lame Duck) all of his Executive orders will no longer be in place if the next President chooses to remove them.

That has been the case for several years. Most legal immigration is via “chain migration”, where one legal entrant invites in family members. There have been proposals to cut off chain migration. Seems clear there are factions who don’t want ANY foreigners in the US, regardless whether legal or illegal.

Maybe all Florida employers are just extremely compliant - nothing to see here (as the nail guns echo across Florida in the hands of immigrant labor on rooftops).
And how effective is the enforcement or E-Verify?

E-Verify isn’t perfect, but it does provide a resource for companies seeking to verify legal work status. It’s not mandatory, unless you’re a federal contractor. Most large construction companies use it. Sometimes people present sketchy documentation, E-Verify takes the guessing game out of the equation and makes difficult decisions much easier.
Why wouldn’t we make it mandatory? Because companies who depend on undocumented workers don’t wanna use it.
You’d think politicians in TX would say “Yee Haw!”, instead they’re taking the “Hold Your Horses” approach.

I didn’t realize how weak Texas is on immigration enforcement with E-Verify - even weaker than Florida!
Texas keeps trying to pass tougher E-Verify, but somehow it doesn’t get passed despite all of the big talk.

These are not relevant. We all used to go to the gate and send off our friends and family. Today you cannot go past TSA without tickets. You live in the current not in the past.

Robots work cheap they say!!
They tell us robots to butcher chickens are already in development. Most recent reports are they are not as good as humans in getting the most high value meat out of a chicken. But that was a few years ago. They are getting better at it. And if manpower is unavailable they can do the calculation. Good enough?
