Insurance Agent Woes

The insurance agent for my auto, home and umbrella coverage retired and his book of business was bought by another agency who promptly marketed my coverage with other companies. The initial quotes I got would have saved me a lot of money, except there were significant errors. Quoted auto at an age 15 years younger than I actually am, didn’t include the earthquake coverage on the homeowner coverage. Took a couple of calls before I got a quote for my current insurer to update the limit of coverage on my homeowner policy and generally unresponsive.

I worked for that insurance company for just short of 20 years in customer service and claims so was easily able to see the errors. I worry about other clients without an insurance background who would likely not catch the errors.

Spoke with the agent six weeks ago to make a couple of changes on my existing policies and again a couple of weeks ago because I hadn’t seen anything from the company and she was going to check and get back to me but hasn’t.

This morning I called the insurance company directly and spent about an hour and a half reviewing all the policies and making appropriate changes. They had nothing on file that the agent had initiated any changes on my behalf. Excellent customer service and the rep ended by telling me to email her if I needed help in the future and she would call me since it would be hit or miss getting to her if I called the call center.

Bottom line - if you get quotes to replace your coverage always look closely to be sure it’s an apples to apples comparison.

And if your broker is not responsive and responsible to your needs, drop them like a hot brick and find another where you feel more valued.
