Pretty sure I brought up music royalties sometime in the last 5 years… thinjk I mentioned that I liked looking at Cage the Elephant royalties.
Recently got an email from royaltyexchange.com about that, it looks like something that was ~$500k a few years back is now well over $1.2M? Cage the Elephant released a new album which spurs playing older songs even on old-time radio…. and they’ll always have the song “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” which is probably a 50 year song, when you look at the appeal for movies, video games, and usage on short form video and so on….
The idea of treating royalties as an income-producing asset is appealing, especially when returns don’t move in sync with traditional markets. I see why people explore catalogs through platforms that offer fractional rights, but I also try to look closely at how stable the revenue history is and whether the licensing pipeline still has momentum. Diversifying across genres or eras can make the whole approach feel more balanced.
