There was a thread a while back (too hard to go back and find) where somebody had been waiting on a refund and asked if others were also experiencing lengthy waits.
Anyway, FWIW, I paper mailed my 2021 return on March 28 and the refund was finally deposited this week, on August 29. Took a couple of months longer than in prior years.
We get a refund but always apply it to next quarters tax estimates due. No need to wait/worry.

I usually request a $1,000 refund and roll the rest to apply to next year tax liability. The deposit of the $1,000 serves as my confirmation my return as been processed.

I filed on March 15, and got my refund yesterday. Because my company turned over its pension fund to the PBGC, and I left my contributory part in rather than taking it out, I have to file a form on paper to make ~3% of my pension free of income tax. (I already paid tax on it prior to “contributing” it.) The form is only available on paper, and necessitated paper filing. Oh, and that pittance is only tax-free for 30 years, then I have to pay taxes on all of the pension.

I wonder if you could e-file without that form, paying the extra tax but getting your a refund sooner. Then file an amended return in paper with the form, eventually getting the refund related to that.
It’s easiest to apply your refund to next year’s estimated taxes. Less paperwork. And fewer hassles waiting for refund check and not receiving same before first estimated tax payment is due.
