I paper filed at the end of February, still have not received refund.
Tried the online “check your refund” app at the IRS website, it just told me that
the IRS cannot give me any info on my refund. Called the IRS hotline, went to the “check
my refund” option in the menu tree, got the exact same response as from the app. At the
end of the call, the IRS message was basically, hey, this doesn’t mean there is anything wrong,
sit tight and you’ll get it when you get it, lol.
Is there some reason you can’t file electronically?
My tax preparer told me I cannot attached certain forms (such as 8936 - foreign financial assets & 5471 - foreign corp ownerships) when I file electronically (but I didn’t confirm independently). Can I file electronically and mailed those forms in?

That’s getting well out of my area of expertise. So I can’t comment further on paper vs. electronic filing.
But I am glad that there is at least some rational reason for the paper filing. While I smile and say “OK” when a couple of my clients insist on paper filing, the reasons are usually irrational.
My other thought is that foreign tax and investment issues are probably what is slowing down the processing.
I mailed mine on 3/28. Sill no refund. Last year the refund hit my bank account about 3 1/2 weeks after filing, so already twice that long this year and the clock is still running.

I filed electronically on March 25 with TaxAct.
The Feds accepted the return the same day.
New Jersey accepted the return the next day (March 26).
My New Jersey refund came into my bank account electronically April 19.
I owed the Feds and they cashed my check April 5. I mailed it to them March 28.
“Is there some reason you can’t file electronically?”
other than inertia, no reason,lol.
I just use the tax instruction book and a calculator, pen & paper.
But it might be a good idea to move into the 21st century, as it doesn’t appear that
the IRS staffing issues are going to be resolved anytime soon.

I had a very similar timeline last year, and same issue this year, so it appears to be
a staffing issue with the IRS. I’m not going to worry about it, I’m not worried about
being audited, so I guess I’ll get it whenever the IRS is ready to send it, lol.

Yep, I rolled about $7K forward to next year to ensure I stay in the safe harbor. I just asked for a nice round $1,000 to be refunded so I can use that as a marker for when my return has been processed.
On the brighter side, the agency tacks on interest if it takes longer than 45 days after the filing deadline to process your return. And the rate will even jump to 5% from July 1. It is good only if your cost of capital is low. And it is taxable.

Tax software eliminates calculation error. I find that important since I’m dyslexic.
an FYI, finally received my Federal tax return. Will strongly consider filing
electronically next year, so I have some idea as to whether the IRS actually even
received my tax return. I called and used their online “where is my refund” option, and
it was useless for me, never got any type of answer, whether I was online or in the call tree.
Wasn’t a big deal, wasn’t cheating on my taxes, so wasn’t worried about getting audited, main concern was that I couldn’t even be sure that the IRS received the tax return.
