Tesla CEO Elon Musk, meanwhile, believes that robots — specifically, his new AI-powered Tesla Optimus humanoid robot — could, in fact, replace an entire profession: surgeons.
In an interview with engineer and XPRIZE Foundation founder Peter Diamandis on his Moonshots podcast in January (2), Musk boasted that, within three years, at scale, “there will probably be more Optimus robots that are great surgeons than there are all surgeons on Earth,” echoing a declaration he made last April (3). He added that, “Everyone will have access to medical care that is better than what the president receives right now.”
When pressed on whether people should simply avoid going to med school altogether, he agreed, calling it “pointless.”
Ah, so it’s not just surgeons but the entire medical profession. What a b*nehead.
Yes robots will be utilized in medicine in the future. And employment of humans in the medical field will be impacted. But a robot takeover is not imminent.
While I disagree with him on robots/AI replacing doctors, they “might” become useful tools. He does like to break things and think outside the box and sometimes comes up with things that can be very useful like his newest realtime translator. Currently limited to Japanese and English. Having traveled and picked up snippets of a handful of languages, translating anything is full of pitfalls, mostly context/slang driven. Fortunately for me, most of the pitfalls resulted in a laugh had by all. But having a realtime translator would have been awesome at the time.
I have an app on my phone which does over 50 languages, with perhaps another 75 yet to go - things like Knurl and Jinpo which I don’t expect to be using soon.
Free. From Google. Does a passable job. I watched part of a Japanese movie a couple weeks ago. It missed some whole sequences but I generally could follow what was going on.
Apple’s AirPod Pro 2 and 3 do live translations, with your iPhone, I think they are adding languages all the time…
“Apple’s Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence, supports real-time translation for 10+ languages in AirPods and Phone/FaceTime apps. Supported languages include English (US, UK), French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain), Chinese (Simplified/Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Turkish, and Vietnamese “
