Legal worker VISAs for truck drivers are being paused

Because of one illegal driver doing a deadly uturn.

I will state that again, the process by which people are allowed to legally be a truck driver from Mexico is now paused because of what one illegal driver did.

How again are we rewarding people that do the right thing? How does this help the economy in any way?

How is this the right thing?

Issuing CDLs to people who are here in the country illegally (as was this fellow) is not a good practice, especially if they are not eligible. From your link:

Concerns about foreign workers driving commercial trucks began after Harjinder Singh, 28, who entered the U.S. illegally, was driving a commercial truck with a trailer…

Further scrutiny of Singh revealed he didn’t pass English and road tests before obtaining a commercial driver’s license. He was granted a full-term commercial driver’s license in Washington in July 2023 despite not being legally eligible.

You need to reread. Worker Visas - people that are following the rules to enter the country and work here LEGALLY are being punished for what this guy did.

Essentially, this will encourage more people to do behave illegally than to get in line for a worker visa.

That’s not good, but a pause to review current programs could well be called for.

The move comes on the heels of an Aug. 12 deadly Florida Turnpike crash involving an 18-wheeler making an unauthorized U-turn. The driver, Harjinder Singh, failed an ELP assessment during an interview with the Federal Motor Carrier Administration following the accident. Singh missed 10 of 12 verbal questions on the proficiency test and was only able to correctly identify one of four traffic signs, according to officials.

During a Tuesday morning news conference, Duffy said the DOT is giving the three states 30 days to comply…

This is nothing more than deflection. His illegal u-turn had nothing to do with English proficiency of guest workers. And, again, the guy was not here legally so a pause on people that come here the right way, with a worker VISA, makes no sense. Either you pass the driving test or you don’t. This guy looks like he should never have been given a license.

But I digress. Let’s also pause the issuance of any new federal firearm licenses in the entire country for 30 days because of some nut job shot up a Catholic school. It is the same rationale.

Maybe, but maybe not. Do we know that he knew that he shouldn’t make a u-turn there? We do know he could only identify 25% of the traffic signs in a test. Don’t you think a driver should be able to read traffic sign in order to get a license?

Sure. Speaking from experience. I was given a CDL when I was younger. I drove a 70+ passenger bus for a summer camp. The three of us taking our road test would have failed, had it not been for the “influence” of our employer. Similar to undocumented workers, if you punish the employers, everything else falls in line. Who hired that driver? Why are we not going after the employers?

Because Capital >>> Labor

Use it in a sentence:
“We value money more than people.”

When I got my US driver’s license in California (1985-6?) they checked to see if I knew hand signals but not if I knew traffic signs.

It’s definitely a complex situation. Pausing worker visas for truck drivers will likely create short-term strain, especially since many industries rely on timely transportation for goods. On the other hand, I can see how the pause might be tied to giving more opportunities to domestic workers or reevaluating the system. The challenge is that the shortage of drivers isn’t new, and without enough workers, supply chains can feel the impact quickly. I’m curious to see whether this pause is temporary or if it leads to longer-term policy adjustments.

Yes. Perhaps pushing us much faster towards automated long haul truck transport?
