MDB Beats

So from your perspective, are we all stuck with the legacy ORCL database for another 40 years?

It is misdirected to think of Mongo replacing Oracle. The bulk of use cases for Mongo are either new applications poorly suited for relational databases or converting applications done with relational DBs for which they were never actually good fits. For many use cases, relational is actually still the best model. As relational and document and … databases continue to evolve it may well be that they will cover more and more of the same use cases, but this hardly impacts our investment thesis.

Steppenwulf,
I spent 30 years in IT before I retired, but I was never a DBA. I was there during the migration from hierarchical (IMS, mostly) to relational (Oracle, mostly). There was no massive recoding of IMS based projects to Oracle, it was only when the IMS system was up for replacement that a new technology base was adopted. When I left the company (Fortune 50) in 2010, there were still a number of COBOL/IMS applications in production as they still served their function well and there was no compelling reason to replace.

I’m curious about your comment The 50% Oracle is so high because there are an awful lot of dinosaur groups at the bank, that won’t be off SQL until forced to be, which is why I expect the long term percentage to be 25% Oracle, 75% Mongo for new projects in the next few years.

Are you implying that even functional operations applications will be forced to a different technology base simply based on age? And you target future relational at 25% of total implementations. That seems low to me, but like I said, I retired almost 10 years ago. Nevertheless, it seems to me that relational is probably the best solution of most transaction based applications. A lot of real world data, especially business data just very well fits the normalized row/column paradigm.

That being said, MDB after its post-earnings runup is now my largest position. IMO, the no-SQL database war is already over. Just like relational, competitors will remain and some of them will have loyal customer base. But, MDB will be the dominant player by far.
