National Geographic: Amelia Earhart eaten by coconut crabs

… and this wasn’t the most surprising thing in my e-mail today.

Behind a firewall, but the next thing your going to tell is that T-Rex had lips.

Maybe T-Rex ate Amelia.

Paywalled… But having spent time in the South Pacific, Amelia’s fate was on many of our minds… If she went down at sea, we may never know. But there may be secret files tucked away that may have some details, a workmate asked a bit too much in the local bar (Army Base), and was called in to the CO’s office, told to shut up or he’d be on the next plane out! So my guess is that somebody knows more than what is public…

Thank you, yes, they Coconut Crabs are extremely strong, literally can tear a coconut open. A co-worker came across one, 18" across, as a test he put a fist sized chunk of coral in its pincer, it just crushed it, no problem. So it is believable as far as them tearing up a body… Normally they move rather slow, but for a joke, someone put one, one night, in the Base’s Officer’s Mess… It didn’t want to be there, wasn’t happy at all and did chase folks around a bit before escaping…

Here’s a video of an Aussie opening up a coconut on a beach and watching the coconut crabs descend on it.
