While it is early and there is still a lot that is not clear, we seem to have a very wide spread ransomware attack. One focus of the attack is customers of Kaseya, a privately held firm that makes some kind of IT management software. Firms in 17 countries have been attacked. One odd feature is that the ransom appears to be a flat $45,000 regardless of the size of the company, possibly because it is a figure likely to be paid and the large number of businesses hit will still result in a reasonable total.
