I guess, but one notices deaths over the years/decades, both accidents and disease (and war). There are family members, friends, work associates, other people in your exercise class, famous people, etc. There are common causes and rare causes. From personal knowledge, I have known zero flu and multiple breast cancer – and both have the same rarity.

I can’t recall reading of someone famous passing from the flu. Of course there was the big epidemic a century ago.

Mark may have hit it when he wrote about multiple causes of death in weaken people.

Not really responding to any one, particular, comment…

Years ago, I was reading a book about Presidential aides. One episode recounted was when a very prominent person was very ill. The aide reasoned that, if they sent a “get well” card now, then had to send a condolences card when the person died, it would be twice as much bother. So the aide sent a directive down the line to the person who had asked about a “get well” card, “wait until he dies”.

That is the sort of thinking I am hearing in these posts about whether to treat old phartz, for anything. “Why? They will die in a few years anyway. Lets use the money to give the “JCs” another tax cut instead”

Steve…old phart

H&N board. And many wish we had it back. A fun way to keep informed even when views sometimes differed.

Re death certificates. When multiple factors are involved they are on the death certificate. If flu is the immediate cause that is usually clear. The real question is how does CDC score the others to enter in their stats.

Yes it was…particularly becoming informed of the many arguments used by the anti vaccine movement (and oftentimes repeated with uninhibited confidence) by those who were influenced by same…to keep it on topic for this thread. The sort of views I never would’ve expected to read in the 21st century.

I can remember back to the early aughts and the muted support for Andrew Wakefield’s “brave maverick doctor” stance…in spite of the growing disquiet with the lack of reproducibility of his MMR-autism claims. I’ll wager that there were folk who thought there must’ve been something to it even after his data were found to be fraudulent. There certainly are out in the wider community.
