OT? Greenland, funny but not funny

Made with humor…but a definite serious undertone.

I predict that the chaotic narcissitic imperial impulses now dominating what is left of actual functionality in the White House would run into extremely embarrassing disasters if they proceed with the same spirit that has brought them such hollow victories as they are now having in Minnesota. POTUS, his sycophants, and even most reporters seem utterly oblivious to the fact that Denmark sees itself not as ruling but rather protecting Greenland, and as having no rights whatsoever to “sell” or “make a deal” with the OrangaThing regarding Greenland’s future — which they see as being up to the Inuit.

The USA, if it blunders in to “take over” a free people, would be facing

A repeat of what would be seen as habitual USAian genocide against original peoples, this time caught on video;
extremely severe economic and social nose punch from European NATO members as they back the polar bears and ancient spirits in supporting Greenlandish independence in myriad furious ways; and
a thrilled and delighted Russia and China.

And the economic blow out is all too easily underestimated. The cost would not merely be money (nor loss of life), but the utter destruction of the system of peacekeeping and world trade that has brought the world to immense prosperity and peace during my lifetime.

We deserve the coming great depression. It is necessary to shake the rich to think. Just to think. Right now the rich are deadbeats. They are avoiding paying taxes.

All of this was done for Putin.

Greenland is a territory of Denmark, which will be hit with a 10 percent tariff on all goods sent to the United States beginning on Feb. 1, Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post. Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Finland, fellow NATO members that have expressed solidarity with Denmark in its refusal to yield to Mr. Trump’s demands, will also be subject to the 10 percent tariff. If those nations do not relent, he added, the rate will increase to 25 percent on June 1, “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”

I told our local baker that we won’t be buying any more danish. Only American apple pie for us.

I wonder if some teams will decide to stay home this summer?

We may see interesting times.

EU capitals are considering hitting the US with €93bn worth of tariffs or restricting American companies from the bloc’s market in response to Donald Trump’s threats to Nato allies opposed to his campaign to takeover Greenland. The move marks the most serious crisis in transatlantic relations for decades. The retaliation measures are being drawn up to give European leaders leverage in pivotal meetings with the US president at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, officials involved in the preparations said. …

Is there a deal in the works?

Greenland PM Open to Permanent NATO Mission on Arctic Island
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-01-22/greenland-leader-open-to-permanent-nato-mission-on-arctic-island
Greenland’s prime minister says he’s willing to go further in increasing the defense of the Arctic island coveted by President Donald Trump, including agreeing on the establishment of a permanent NATO mission…

Trump announced he’d agreed to a “framework” with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, offering scant detail. According to a European official briefed on the talks, the pact entails the stationing of US missiles, mining rights aimed at keeping Chinese interests out and a bolstered NATO presence.

Greenland proposal Trump endorsed respects Denmark’s sovereignty: sources
https://www.axios.com/2026/01/21/greenland-deal-trump-denmark-sovereignty
Two sources with knowledge of Rutte’s proposal said it doesn’t include the transfer of overall sovereignty over Greenland from Denmark to the United States…

  • The plan includes updating the 1951 “Greenland Defense Agreement” between the U.S. and Denmark, which allowed the U.S. to build military bases in the island and establish “defense areas” if NATO believed it necessary.

  • It also includes sections on increasing security in Greenland and NATO activity in the Arctic, as well as additional work on raw materials, the sources said.

  • The proposal also includes language on positioning “Golden Dome” in Greenland and on countering “malign outside influence” by Russia and China.

What they’re saying: “If this deal goes through, and President Trump is very hopeful it will, the U.S. will be achieving all of its strategic goals with respect to Greenland, at very little cost, forever.”

In other words, pretty much the status quo.

I think that’s wrong. We will have achieved our strategic goals at enormous cost, given the damage to our relationships with most of our major allies. Something that could have been achieved with a mere phone call last January ended up nearly rupturing NATO, disrupting the incipient EU-US trade deal, and cementing the U.S.’ loss of status as a reliable economic and security partner, for absolutely no reason.

There are not enough thumb’s up for this. Nothing, absolutely nothing that we might have gotten out of this “concept of a deal” is something we did not already have, or could have had, with a simple, cordial phone call.

This is nothing but self inflicted wound after self inflicted wound. We are witnessing sovereign suicide, and some here are cheering it on. Unreal.

And it is way beyond reckless amateurism. It’s intentional; wreck the country for the benefit of the few, wealthy elitists. Putin must be very proud of his protege.

It is true that the world order is changing. It has been 80 years since Potsdam and over a third of a century since the Berlin Wall came down.

Speaking from the UK I would like to see the USA take control of Greenland. The UK and the rest of Europe have relied on US military power to defend us, as we would prefer to spend our cash on expensive welfare programmes. For example Denmark has a population of six million people and its armed forces (army, navy and air force) amount to about 20,000! One for every 300 citizens! This is quite high compared to some countries. Spain has a population of almost 50 million with the armed forces personal of 122K.

Given the above I would feel more happier with a Greenland owned/controlled by the USA rather than run the risk of it falling into the hands of Russia or someone else.
I also suspect that the USA would ‘open up’ the economy of Greenland and give a boost to both USA and world trade. A stronger USA means a safer UK and Europe.

I’m not too sure about the approach of Trump though!

Those things are true, and also irrelevant to this particular issue. Unless you’re saying that the world has changed so much that we no longer benefit - at all - from having stable and friendly economic and security relationships with the countries that make up the near-entirety of the western democratic economic world?
